Ambassador for First Nations People

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

On 7 March 2023, Mr Justin Mohamed was announced as Australia's inaugural Ambassador for First Nations People. This role focuses on First Nations representation in Australia’s international engagement.

Under Ambassador Mohamed’s leadership, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) established the Office for First Nations International Engagement. The Office is working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to develop and implement a First Nations approach to foreign policy.

Ambassador Mohamed has a strong connection to community, having worked extensively in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, social justice and reconciliation over a number of decades, in both the government and corporate sectors.
